Antoine Sanzay is the sixth generation of his family to farm in Varrains, a village that sits in the heart of Saumur-Champigny and counts the legendary Clos Rougeard among its neighbours. He took the reins of the domaine in 1999 — still a young man, having lost his father at the age of ten — and has since built one of the appellation's most quietly compelling estates, earning organic certification in 2014. La Paterne draws on around four hectares of Cabernet Franc vines averaging over forty years old, their roots reaching deep into the porous yellow tuffeau limestone that is the signature of this corner of the Loire, coaxing both freshness and genuine depth from the soil.

In the cellar, Sanzay works with a light hand: grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, then fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts before a long maceration of twenty-five to thirty days that gently extracts colour and fine-grained tannin without any hardness. Ageing runs for around nine months split between concrete and old wood, with no sulphur added during fermentation or ageing and no fining at any stage. The result is a wine of striking purity — vivid red and dark fruit, a medium body kept taut by classic Loire acidity, and silky tannins that make it as pleasurable young as it will be rewarding with a few years in the cellar.
