Mercurey is the largest and most reputed appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, with a notable Premier Cru area for the subregion: 32 recognised climats, most oriented east-southeast over Jurassic marls and limestones. The Pinot Noir reds—more structured than those of the Côte de Beaune, with a profile of black cherry and spices—and the Chardonnay whites from the finest climats (Clos l'Évêque, Les Champs Martin) offer a quality-to-price ratio difficult to match in Burgundy, often at half the price of Côte de Beaune equivalents.
