Learn more about Château de Chamirey

The château was built in the early eighteenth century, with an Italian-influenced architecture unusual in Burgundy. The towers that identify it today came later: they were built at the end of that same century, after a fire destroyed the chapel. It was after that fire that the Dupaty de Clam family sold the property to the Jouennes d'Herville, who bought it in 1932.

Two years later came the decision that defines the house. In 1934 the Marquis de Jouennes chose to bottle his wine at the estate itself, at a time when the norm in Burgundy was to sell the harvest in bulk to the négoce. He was among the first to do so in the Côte Chalonnaise.

His son-in-law, Bertrand Devillard, later took over and expanded the property across Mercurey's finest sites. Today it is run by his children Amaury and Aurore Devillard, the fifth generation of Burgundy winemakers, alongside their father.

There are some thirty-eight hectares in Mercurey, of which eight and a half are premier cru and just over three are monopoles: parcels whose ownership they share with nobody.
