Chile's northernmost wine region, between latitudes 26° and 28° S, with vineyards in the Valle del Huasco and Valle del Copiapó. The extreme desert climate — less than 20 mm of rain per year — requires irrigation from Andean snowmelt. Diurnal temperature variation is extreme: very hot days and cold nights. The region produces mainly Moscatel de Alejandría and Torrontés for fresh aromatic wines. Pisco — a grape-based spirit made from Moscatel — is historically the most important viticultural product of the zone.
