1998 — Extreme heat in August and September in Bordeaux ripened Merlot to perfection, with Pomerol — including the legendary Pétrus — and Saint-Émilion clearly outperforming the Cabernet-dominant Médoc. Burgundy was good across the board. The Northern Rhône, especially Côte Rôtie, produced a legendary vintage.

In Spain, Rioja gran reservas from 1998 remain highly enjoyable today, combining mature fruit, developed tertiary complexity and enough structure to continue evolving. A vintage that rewards those with the patience to open bottles now, at their peak.
