The most celebrated commune in the Médoc — and arguably in all of Bordeaux — this appellation is home to three of Bordeaux's five First Growths: Châteaux Latour, Lafite Rothschild, and Mouton Rothschild. The deep, well-drained gravel plateaux that define the commune's finest sites allow Cabernet Sauvignon to reach an expression unmatched anywhere in the region, producing wines of extraordinary power, structure, and complexity.

These are wines built explicitly for the long term — authoritative in youth, almost impenetrable in the first decade, but capable of evolving over fifteen, twenty-five, or even forty years into wines of breathtaking aromatic nuance and complexity. Allow at least ten years for classified estates; the First Growths reward thirty or more years of patient cellaring.
