This foral community presents remarkable geographical diversity: from the Pyrenees to the north, with Atlantic influence and high altitudes, to the Bardenas Reales to the south, with a dry Mediterranean-continental climate. This diversity results in very different styles depending on the sub-zone, with the five official zones — Baja Montaña, Valdizarbe, Tierra Estella, Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja — reflecting this north-south gradient.

Garnacha was the historic emblematic variety of Navarra, particularly for rosados, but Tempranillo has increased its presence in the vineyard over recent decades. International varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay — have a greater presence here than in most Spanish DOs, giving rise to internationally styled blends. Garnacha rosados made by saignée or direct pressing remain a historic benchmark of the denomination.
