The Geographical Indication Vino de la Tierra de Castilla covers the southern sub-plateau of Castilla-La Mancha outside the delimited DOs. It permits more flexible regulations than the denominaciones de origen, covering a wide range of varieties — Tempranillo/Cencibel, Airén, Garnacha, Syrah, Petit Verdot — and styles. It produces everyday reds alongside noteworthy artisan wines at competitive prices. The vast territory and coexistence of cooperative cellars and boutique producers make Castilla VT the most heterogeneous category in Spanish wine.
