The denomination, recognised in 2007, occupies the valley of the River Arlanza in the province of Burgos, at altitudes of 830 to 1,000 metres, with the vineyard concentrated around localities such as Lerma, Covarrubias and Poza de la Sal. It is one of the newest and smallest DOs in Castilla y León; the climate is continental with moderate Atlantic influence due to the valley's opening towards the north.

Tempranillo is the dominant red variety, accompanied by Garnacha, Mencía and Petit Verdot. Whites are produced from Albillo Mayor and Viura. The reds combine the structure of high-altitude Tempranillo with greater freshness than in more southerly denominations, with a proven ageing potential demonstrated by the most committed producers in the territory.
