To the north of Gevrey-Chambertin, Fixin produces Pinot Noir reds of robust, firm character, with heavy clay and limestone soils that delay ripening and yield wines of more marked tannins and high acidity, requiring at least 5 to 8 years in bottle to express themselves fully. Its most celebrated Premiers Crus — Clos du Chapitre and Clos Napoléon — have a centuries-old history: the latter bears that name because the village preserves a statue of Napoleon donated by his aide Noisot in the nineteenth century.

Historically undervalued relative to its neighbour Gevrey-Chambertin, Fixin offers wines of similar structure at noticeably lower prices. The appellation shares geological characteristics with the north of Gevrey and the most rigorous producers — Philippe Joliet in Clos Napoléon, Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet — demonstrate that the longevity and complexity of Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits are not the exclusive preserve of the Grands Crus.
