The South Coast of the Western Cape groups South Africa's most southerly and coastal appellations: Walker Bay, Cape Agulhas, Elim, and Overberg. The combined influence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, together with exposure to cold marine winds, produces a cooler climate than Stellenbosch or Paarl, with temperatures that allow reds of moderate colour and marked acidity, and whites of great aromatic precision.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Walker Bay—especially in the Hemel-en-Aarde valleys, on slate, granite, and clay soils—are the benchmark of the zone, producing wines of elegant structure and ageing potential. Sauvignon Blanc in Cape Agulhas and Elim, with precise herbaceous and citrus notes, is also a speciality of the subregion. The international profile of these appellations has grown steadily since 2010.
