The appellation occupies the southernmost tip of Catalonia, on a plateau at 400–700 metres protected by mountains that create a continental-influenced microclimate moderated by the Mediterranean. Soils are predominantly clay-limestone, with outcrops of calcareous limestone at higher elevations. The Cierzo and Garbí, local winds that regulate humidity, favour vine health.

Garnacha Blanca is the most planted variety and the appellation's defining asset: it produces whites of high acidity, volume on the palate, and ageing potential on limestone. The reds from Garnacha and Cariñena show concentration and body typical of the semi-arid climate of southern Catalonia. The Vi de Vila category highlights wines linked to specific municipal terroirs within the DO.
