Learn more about Portugal

Portugal, with fewer than 240,000 hectares under vine, holds the highest proportion of indigenous varieties relative to its surface area of any wine-producing country. Climatic conditions range from the cool, humid Atlantic north — Minho, upper Douro — to the dry Mediterranean-continental climate of the Alentejo and the Algarve. The Douro river and the Atlantic Ocean are the two geographical axes that organise Portuguese viticulture.

The most recognised denominations are the Douro (Touriga Nacional reds and Port fortified wines), the Minho (Vinho Verde, whites from Alvarinho and Loureiro), the Dão (Touriga Nacional reds on granite) and the Alentejo (reds from Trincadeira, Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet). The reference varieties are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Trincadeira, Baga, Alvarinho, Arinto and Encruzado.
