At the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, between Dijon and Fixin, Marsannay holds the distinction of being the only AOC in Burgundy authorised to produce wines in all three colours: white (Chardonnay), red (Pinot Noir) and rosé (Pinot Noir by pressurage direct). The Marsannay rosé, with its dry and fruity character, was the denomination's historic speciality before the AOC for reds and whites was granted in 1987.

The denomination has 44 lieux-dits recognised — Clos du Roy, Les Longeroies, Les Favières — but, unlike its immediate neighbours, has neither Grands Crus nor Premiers Crus. It is a village that, despite its proximity to Gevrey-Chambertin, produces reds of approachable character and reasonable prices, ideal for exploring the wines of the Côte de Nuits.
