Domaine Alain Graillot, AOP Crozes-Hermitage (Pont-de-l'Isère). La Guiraude is a selection of the domaine's finest barrels, made only in favourable vintages. Vineyards on alluvial terraces of the Rhône and Isère: free-draining sandy soils studded with rounded river pebbles and alluvial gravel. Vines from 15 to over 60 years old. Organic viticulture without formal certification: ploughing, short pruning, no herbicides.
100% Syrah, hand-harvested whole-cluster, fermented in concrete or stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts; total cuvaison 13 to 18 days. Aged approximately 12 months in used 228-litre Burgundy barrels (one to three years old), no new oak. Bottled unfined. Alain Graillot, who founded the domaine in 1985 and shaped Crozes-Hermitage's modern identity, passed away in March 2022, leaving this vintage in the hands of his sons Maxime and Antoine, who have guided the estate since 2008.
Ficha del Vino: La Guiraude
Descripción generada por IA con conocimiento WSET. Solo orientativa.
Alain Graillot did not come to wine through inheritance but through renunciation. He trained as an electrochemical engineer and spent the first half of his life working for international pharmaceutical companies —Roussel-Uclaf among them— with postings in Guatemala and Costa Rica. In 1985 he left a career in agrochemicals and started from scratch with a rented plot on the site of a former pig farm, on the Chassis plateau, between Tain-l'Hermitage and Pont-de-l'Isère.
From there he became the name that put Crozes-Hermitage on the map of the great Syrahs of the Northern Rhône. He died at seventy-seven.
The domaine today is eighteen hectares of Syrah and two of Marsanne and Roussanne, planted in a ratio of eighty to twenty. In vintages that allow it there is also a denser, longer-lived cuvée, La Guiraude. The house is run by his son Maxime, who joined in 2008 after taking his oenology diploma in Dijon, alongside his brother Antoine.
