Teso La Monja
We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.
In 1998 the Eguren family founded Numanthia in Toro and took it all the way to a hundred Parker points with Termanthia. In 2008 they sold it to LVMH for a figure put at over twenty-five million euros, from a production that did not reach a hundred thousand bottles. And with part of that money they set up Teso La Monja a short distance from the winery they had just sold, to start again in the same appellation.
It is run by Marcos and Miguel Ángel Eguren, the fourth generation of the family from San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Their range in Toro runs from Romanico to Almirez, Victorino, Alabaster and Teso La Monja itself.
Alabaster comes from 11.5 hectares of estate vineyard in the Valmediano, La Jara and Marinacea sites, bush-trained, averaging more than a hundred years old and between 800 and 900 metres. It is organically manured and is 100% Tinta de Toro.
It is destemmed by hand, berry by berry. It ferments in small 10-hectolitre oak vats with traditional treading, goes through malolactic in new French oak and ages sixteen to eighteen months in new barrels as well.
