Casa Lebai

We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.

Their own relatives planted the plots, and for each one it is known who and when: La Nava in 1940, by their great-grandfather Sergio Calvo, and Matadiablos in 1997, by Antonio Figuero Calvo, first cousin to them both.

The two of them are Rodrigo and Asier Calvo, ninth generation of a family that has made wine in Gumiel de Mercado, in Burgos, since 1780. Casa Lebai began with the 2019 vintage.

Of the family's 32 holdings they picked three, for the age of the vines, the soil and how each behaved in the cellar. What they are after is keeping the village's old vineyard alive.

Matadiablos comes from the plot of the same name: bush-vine tinto fino planted in 1997, in the Aguachar pago, on a gentle north-facing slope at 826 metres. El Portillo comes from 1.46 hectares planted in 1936 in the upper part of the La Nava site, at 829 metres facing east, with tinto fino, garnacha and valenciano.

Both ferment in stainless steel tank and age twelve months in large 3,000-litre foudres, which leave little oak in the wine.
