Viejas de Izán is an artisanal, author-driven project founded in 2019 and rooted in Gumiel de Izán, a municipality in the heart of DO Ribera del Duero that is believed to hold the greatest concentration of centenarian Tempranillo vines in the entire appellation. The wine is sourced from more than ten individual parcels planted at around 900 metres altitude on calcareous-sandy soils, where 100% Tinto Fino vines exceeding a century in age are harvested by hand with rigorous bunch selection carried out parcel by parcel.

The philosophy behind VDI combines deep respect for tradition with meticulous precision and minimal intervention, allowing the extreme age of the vines and the singular terroir of Gumiel to speak for themselves without interference. Those venerable roots push deep into the subsoil and yield tiny quantities of intensely concentrated fruit, while the high altitude tempers the Continental climate and preserves natural freshness and tension in the wine. The result in the 2022 vintage is a Ribera del Duero of real depth and mineral character — structured and layered, yet with the definition and vitality that only old vines on great soils can deliver.

Este vino proviene de viñedos centenarios ubicados en Gumiel de Izán a una altura de 900 metros sobre el nivel del mar. El suelo es calizo y arenoso, lo que contribuye a la complejidad del sabor. La vendimia se realiza manualmente con selección de racimo para garantizar la máxima calidad. Durante 25 días, el vino pasa por una maceración prolongada seguida de una crianza de 14 meses en barricas de roble francés y americano.

El VDI es un tinto intenso y elegante con notas de frutas negras maduradas como la ciruela y el moras, complementadas con toques de especias y vainilla. Su estructura robusta se equilibra con taninos suaves y una acidez viva que aporta frescura.

Aunque no hay puntuaciones específicas disponibles para este vino, los críticos destacan la complejidad aromática y el buen equilibrio entre fruta y madera.

En general, es un vino de carácter mediano-alto con una personalidad marcada por su crianza en roble que le aporta notas tostadas y especiadas sin perder la frescura y pureza del Tempranillo.
