Bodegas Vizcarra

We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.

José Manuel Vizcarra Aguado planted vines at Mambrilla de Castrejón in the 1980s, before Ribera del Duero became fashionable. The winery begins with his son, Juan Carlos Vizcarra Ramos, who in 1991 inherited his father's old vines and made his first wines in the family garage: young wines first, then wines for ageing.

Since 1996 the house has concentrated on single-vineyard wines from specific sites in Mambrilla de Castrejón and Roa de Duero. The current winery, working since 2007, was designed without pumps: must and wine move by gravity alone. It is also one of the few in the appellation making carbonic-maceration reds.

Torralvo is the successor to the house's first Reserva, the 1998, released as Selección de Nuestras Viñas. It is Tinto Fino from bush vines around seventy years old, at 849 metres, on sandy-clay-limestone soils with gravel.

It is hand-picked into fifteen-kilo crates over a sorting table and fully destemmed. It macerates for twenty-five days, goes through malolactic in new barrels and ages seventeen to eighteen months in new 500-litre French oak.
