Collina San Ponzio
We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.
The name is not the family's but the place's: San Ponzio is the hamlet that looks out from Vergne towards La Morra. The winery was founded by Pietro Balocco in 1878 —hence the name of the range they bottle today— and has passed from father to son ever since, now into the fifth generation. His son Antonino was awarded a gold medal in 1978 for the centenary of the founding.
They have occupied the current cellar since 1986, a farmstead surrounded by vines that they renovated and enlarged in 1999. The vineyard is three and a half hectares between La Morra and Barolo, inside the Fossati cru, with vines ranging from five to fifty years old.
Fossati faces southeast between 380 and 400 metres, on clay-limestone soils with fossil sand. The Nebbiolo is aged in large Slavonian oak botti, in the Piedmontese neoclassical manner: no small barrels and no hurry.
