The Ca' Rome' 2016 Barolo Cerretta opens to a deep ruby color and pretty aromatic intensity. The bouquet is authentic and pristine with wild berry aromas, blood orange, aniseed and campfire ash. There's even a cheerful hint of crushed white pepper that adds a zesty touch of spiciness to the finish. In the mouth, this wine is long and polished with lingering oak spice. Some 8,000 bottles were released.

Learn more about Ca' Romé

Ca' Romé was born not from an inheritance but from a wait. Romano Marengo set up on his own in 1980, after thirty years working in wine for other people. The winery stands at the top of the Rabajà hill in Barbaresco and is run by the whole family: his wife Olimpia in management; Giuseppe —Pino— heading production and grape selection; Paola on the commercial side; and Maria.

The vines in Serralunga d'Alba, in Barolo territory, came down the maternal line: they were inherited from grandmother Maria di Brün, Romano's mother-in-law. The family named one of its Barbarescos after her. In total there are around five hectares split between Barbaresco and Serralunga, with an average output of some 2,500 cases a year.

That is where our Barolo Ceretta comes from: Serralunga Nebbiolo between 310 and 371 metres, destemmed, macerated for about twenty days without exceeding 30 °C, aged twenty-four months partly in Slavonian oak and a further year in bottle before release.
