Wine Identification
The Château de Vaudieu 2019 is a red wine produced by the eponymous winery, located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of France’s Rhône region.
Origin and Winemaking
This vintage originates from vineyards situated at elevations between 85 and 125 meters above sea level. The site is characterized by a complex geological mosaic comprising sand, terraces of laminated pebbles, marls, and limestone slopes. The blend consists of 80% Grenache (Garnacha) and 20% Syrah. Harvesting is conducted manually. In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and crushed before being transferred to stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is maintained at approximately 25 °C. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes maceration for about 30 days, with daily pump-overs and rackings to manage extraction. A key feature of the production process is that parcels are vinified separately before being blended together. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrels that have held at least one previous wine.
Expected Profile
Reflecting its diverse terroir, the wine combines the structural depth of Syrah with the fruit-forward character typical of Grenache. The extended maceration and specific temperature control during fermentation suggest a wine with significant phenolic ripeness and extraction potential. The separate vinification of parcels allows for precise blending to balance the various soil influences, from the sandy plots to the limestone and marl sections.
Critical Reception
The Wine Advocate (Parker) awarded this vintage a score of 92 points.
Overall Character
Château de Vaudieu 2019 presents as a serious, structured Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its complexity is derived from the unique geological diversity of its vineyards and a meticulous winemaking approach that emphasizes separate parcel vinification. The result is a wine that showcases the distinct characteristics of its multiple terroirs while maintaining cohesion through careful blending and 12 months in used barrels.

The château was built in 1767 by Admiral Gérin, a lieutenant of the Marseille admiralty, and is one of the three eighteenth-century castles still standing in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The name comes from that same year: the Archbishop of Avignon blessed the property and called it Val de Dieu, the valley of God. Vaudieu came from that, and one of their cuvées is still called Val de Dieu.
In the mid-19th century, just before phylloxera, the estate was one of the four great vineyards of the appellation.
There are 70 hectares in a single block of land, uncommon in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where vineyards are usually scattered in parcels across the commune. Sixty go to red and ten to white. The soil is a mosaic of more than seven different geological compositions — sand, safres, sandstone, terraces of rolled pebbles, marls and limestone slopes — between 85 and 125 metres, and each terroir is vinified and aged separately before blending.
The Bréchet family has been at the house for three generations, with Laurent Bréchet in charge.
