Château Gigognan

The name comes from a Roman legionary, Giglius, who raised a temple here. The temple was destroyed and in the fourteenth century rebuilt as a priory: it was the second residence of the Bishop of Avignon.

Through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the estate prospered enough to be granted the title of village. That former place of worship and the land around it became a fief, and together with Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bédarrides they formed the principality governed by the archbishops of Avignon. The three names have gone together ever since.

The modern chapter was opened by Anne and Jacques Callet, who bought the Clos du Roi and spent the 1990s restoring the château and building a proper cellar. Jacques died in July 2016 and the property was bought by Jean-François Henin in 2017.

One hundred and ten hectares of vines among hills, umbrella pines and olive trees, with wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Signargues, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and Côtes-du-Rhône. Clos du Roi is their benchmark Châteauneuf.
