Located in the far northwest of Castilla y León, the denomination occupies a basin sheltered by the Sierra de los Ancares to the north and the foothills of the Cabrera and Aquilanos to the south, which moderates the continental rigour of the Castilian interior and allows Atlantic influence to penetrate. Altitudes range from 450 metres on the valley floor to more than 1,000 metres on the slate hillsides.

The leading variety is Mencía, an indigenous red variety that, grown on hillside slate, produces wines of moderate colour, vibrant acidity, fine tannin and an aromatic profile of fresh red fruit and herbs. Old vines on slate terraces in the Bierzo Alto — the villages of Valtuille, Corullón and Quilós — are the denomination's quality benchmark. Godello produces highly expressive whites with ageing potential in the same area.
