Destemmed. Fermented for approximately one month in open wooden vats with punch-downs. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wooden vats. Aged in large-format oak barrels.

El Villa de Corullón 2019 es un vino tinto de la bodega Descendientes de José Palacios, situado en la Denominación de Origen Bierzo, dentro de la región de Castilla y León. Se produce exclusivamente en el municipio de Corullón, aprovechando viñedos ubicados en laderas de fuerte pendiente entre los 500 y 950 metros de altitud, sobre suelos de roca pizarrosa.

Según la nota de The Wine Advocate, la composición de esta añada es 91% Mencía, 1% Alicante Bouschet y un 8% de variedades blancas de viñas viejas (de 50 a 90 años). Las viñas se cultivan en ecológico y biodinámica. La vinificación se realiza con uvas parcialmente despalilladas, fermentando durante 43 días en tinas de madera abiertas con levaduras autóctonas y con bazuqueos. La fermentación maloláctica ocurre de forma espontánea en madera, seguida de una crianza de 10 meses en barricas y fudres de roble.

En cata, el vino presenta un color cereza. En la nariz ofrece notas balsámicas, especias dulces, hierbas de monte y fruta negra madura. En boca se confirma su carácter especiado y balsámico, con una buena acidez. Se describe como un vino fluido, versátil y complejo, con notas herbáceas, un alcohol moderado del 13,5% y taninos muy finos que aportan gran equilibrio y frescura.

Sobre su puntuación y recepción crítica, la Guía Peñín le otorga 94 puntos, destacando su perfil especiado y balsámico. The Wine Advocate le concede 96 puntos, describiéndolo como un Corullón sutil y elegante, de añada fluida, que puede ser una de las más ligeras y elegantes de este vino. Se produjeron 20.344 botellas.

Following the new classification of wines, the 2019 Villa de Corullón is a Vino de Villa (village), produced with grapes from 6.71 hectares divided into 200 small plots they own on slate-rich soils at 500 to 950 meters in altitude. It's 91% Mencía, 1% Alicante Bouschet and 8% white grapes from old vines (50 to 90 years old) that are organically and biodynamically farmed, and the wine will be certified in the coming years. The partly destemmed grapes fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts for 43 days and matured in barriques and foudres for 10 months. It has a "moderate" 13.5% alcohol, the lower part of the range, as they aim at 13.5% to 14% alcohol in the finished wines. This is a great blending exercise, as the wines are blended mostly before putting it in barrel. It's a subtle and elegant Corullón, with great balance and freshness; Ricardo talked about some tannins that are very fine. It's a fluid vintage for this bottling, a little herbal, versatile and complex. It seems to have more character than the Moncerbal than it has had in other years. This can be one of the lightest and most elegant vintages of Corullón, with a different texture from the rest of the 2019s. There were 20,344 bottles and some other formats produced.

The winery's name says literally what it is. José Palacios was Álvaro's father and Ricardo's grandfather, and the patriarch of Palacios Remondo, in Rioja. The two of them started the Bierzo project in 1999 and gave it his name; he died in early 2000, shortly after seeing the first harvest.

It was set up by Ricardo Pérez Palacios and his uncle Álvaro Palacios in Corullón, on the western edge of Bierzo. What decided them was that the minute variations in soil and exposure on those hillsides reminded them of Burgundy's Côte d'Or or Piedmont's Langhe, so they work plot by plot.

All the estate fruit is farmed biodynamically, and vineyard work is done by hand or with a mule. Ricardo has spent years influencing a generation of Spanish growers with that approach.
