Founded in 1636 in Bernkastel-Kues, Weingut Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch has been shaped by one of the Mosel's most storied acquisitions: in 1882, Dr. Hugo Thanisch purchased parcels of the legendary Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard at public auction for more than 100,000 gold marks. When he died in 1895, his 29-year-old widow Katharina took over the estate with three children — a fact preserved to this day in the official "Wwe." (Witwe = widow) of the winery's name. Seven generations of uninterrupted family ownership and winemaker Max Ferger, at the helm since 2009, continue that tradition.

This 2023 Feinherb is 100% Riesling sourced from the Middle Mosel, incorporating Bernkastel Badstube Kabinett fruit grown on steep black and blue slate slopes above the river. "Feinherb" is a voluntary producer designation — off-dry but perceptibly drier than Halbtrocken — achieved here by fermenting a portion of the wine close to dryness and blending it back with the Kabinett component for balance; vinification involves hand-harvesting, gentle pressing, slow spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and ageing in neutral 1,000-litre Mosel Fuder with minimal SO₂, bottled under screwcap at around 10% alcohol. The result is fresh and elegant, with slate minerality running through notes of peach, pear, grapefruit, kumquat, watermelon, and delicate florals.
