Château de Targé has been in the same family since its founding in 1655, with Edouard Pisani-Ferry taking the helm in 1976 and gradually reducing yields, expanding the estate to 24 hectares, and earning organic and HVE certification by 2020. The domaine sits on the tuffeau plateau of Parnay, above the Loire in Maine-et-Loire, where the Les Fresnettes parcel — its name derived from the ash trees (*frêne*) that once marked the land — grows 100% Chenin Blanc over a tuffeau subsoil with shallow clay-silt topsoils of just 25 centimetres to one metre in depth.

Harvest is carried out in two or three manual passes to select grapes at peak ripeness, followed by pneumatic pressing and fermentation in 400-litre demi-muids — one third new oak, one third one-wine, one third two-wine — where the wine then ages for nine to twelve months. The result is a dry, structured Saumur Blanc with aromas of baked apple, quince, and pear, layered with honey and brioche and closing on a toasted almond finish, underpinned throughout by Chenin Blanc's characteristic lively acidity and genuine ageing potential. The 2020 vintage earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast; earlier vintages received a Hachette Coup de Cœur (2018), and the wine has been noted by both Jancis Robinson and Decanter, which ranked it among the top Chenin Blancs of Anjou.
