Domaine de Pied Flond, AOP Coteaux du Layon (Terranjou, Haut-Layon). Franck and Catherine Gourdon, seventh generation since 1864. ~25 ha on sandstone and schist soils. HVE Level 3 certified. The Coteaux du Layon AOC is dedicated exclusively to sweet Chenin Blanc, with its microclimate of morning mists and warm afternoons promoting late harvests and noble rot. 100% Chenin Blanc, harvested at full overripeness.
Aged in stainless steel. Production: 12,000 bottles.
The buildings predate the vines: a former fifteenth-century seigneurie built in shell limestone, the fossil-rich stone of Anjou that cuts easily and was used for centuries to build. The Gourdon family settled there in 1864, and seven generations have followed since. Franck and Catherine run it today.
The estate is in Terranjou, the commune that takes in Martigné-Briand, in the heart of the Coteaux du Layon. The vineyard continues the slope of Bonnezeaux, which is where the Layon gives its most highly regarded sweet wines.
Around twenty-five hectares planted on ancient soils of sandstone and schist. The list of varieties is long and very much of Anjou: chenin, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, gamay, chardonnay, grolleau, grolleau gris and pineau d'Aunis.
