Abeica El Bardallo 2022

This red wine from Abeica, produced in San Vicente de la Sonsierra within the Rioja DOCa, is a distinctive expression of La Rioja’s viticultural heritage. The vineyard, planted in 1958 at an altitude of 540 meters, features an east-west orientation and soils composed of clay-limestone with surface sands. The blend is notably complex, comprising 50% Tempranillo, 40% Viura, 5% Garnacha Tinta, and 5% Garnacha Blanca and Torrontés together.

The winemaking process emphasizes co-fermentation, with all varieties fermented together in open tanks. This is preceded by cold pre-fermentative maceration and followed by a six-day post-fermentative maceration. The wine is drawn off the skins without pressing and matures for eleven months in 500-liter French oak barrels that have been seasoned with wine, with natural stabilization at the end. Malolactic fermentation also occurs within these barrels, contributing to the wine’s integrated texture.

On the palate, El Bardallo presents a sophisticated aromatic profile typical of its multi-varietal composition and extended barrel aging. The co-fermentation likely enhances aromatic complexity and mouthfeel, while the French oak imparts subtle structural nuances. Critics have responded highly favorably to this vintage. The Wine Advocate (Parker) awarded it 95 points, and James Suckling also scored it at 95, reflecting its quality and distinction within the Rioja region.

Abeica El Bardallo stands out as a singular offering from a historic single vineyard. Its unique blend of red and white grapes, combined with traditional manual harvesting and specific aging techniques, results in a wine that balances power with elegance. It represents a refined interpretation of Rioja’s potential, marked by the character of its old vines and meticulous vinification.

Learn more about Abeica

Abeica has farmed vines in Ábalos for five generations. This three-hundred-inhabitant village in La Sonsierra sits beneath a mountain ridge that acts as a natural screen, with vineyards on clay-limestone soils between 450 and 590 metres. Julián Fernández bought the first plots for family use; today siblings Isabel, Ricardo, Pachi and Raúl lead the project. In the nineties the bodega grew by buying in grapes from neighbours — the four siblings chose to go back to working only with their own vines.

Viticulture is organic in practice, uncertified — they call it living viticulture: whole-family manual harvest, no tractor (steep slopes are worked with a mechanical mule), low yields and parcel-by-parcel selection. Varieties are Rioja's own: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo for reds and Viura, Garnacha blanca and Torrontés for whites. Each vineyard has its own name: Carronillo, Larrumbe, El Bardallo, Abaris. The Mazuelo de Larrumbe grows at 590 metres and yields barely 1,500 bottles; Abaris is old-vine Viura fermented in French oak.

Winemaking blends the carbonic maceration of Rioja tradition with whole-cluster fermentation and cold pre-fermentation. The wines have a clear sense of variety and of place — the kind that only comes from old vines in land you own.
