Lapis Luna is a California wine brand founded in 1999 and owned by WarRoom Cellars since 2018. The wines are made by Nicole Walsh, a winemaker with over 23 vintages of experience, including nearly two decades at Bonny Doon Vineyard. All fruit is sourced exclusively from Pauli Ranch in Mendocino County, a long-standing collaboration with the Pauli family.

The 2023 Chardonnay carries the California appellation; grapes were harvested at night between 9 September and 18 October 2023 across a long, cool growing season. After destemming, gentle pressing, and four days of cold settling, fermented in a combination of stainless steel and lightly toasted French oak, with partial spontaneous malolactic fermentation and six months of sur-lie ageing in French oak. 14.5% ABV, sealed with a screwcap.

Learn more about Lapis Luna

It is worth saying up front: Lapis Luna is a brand, not an estate. It was created in 1999 and relaunched in 2018 by Andrew Nelson, with a supply agreement with the Paulis, a substantial grape-growing family in Mendocino County. The fruit comes from the North Coast and from Lodi, and the winemaking is led by Nicole Walsh.

The most recognisable thing about the house is on the label, and it is four hundred years old. The illustrations come from copperplate engravings of the early seventeenth century: in 1624 the poet Herman Hugo published Pia Desideria —"pious desires"— an emblem book whose images are the ones dressing the bottles today.
