Château Filhot

The estate begins between 1630 and 1650, and Romain de Filhot finished building the château in 1709. It is one of the largest and oldest in the area.

After the French Revolution the property passed to the Lur-Saluces family — the family of Yquem and de Fargues — inherited through Joséphine de Filhot. In 1840 Romain Bertrand de Lur-Saluces joined the vineyards of Filhot and Pineau du Rey, and the estate grew considerably.

After the 1855 classification something happened that would be unthinkable today: for decades the wine was sold under the name Château Sauternes, that is, under the name of the entire appellation. Not until 1901 was it labelled Château Filhot again.

Sixty-two hectares are farmed today. In the late nineteenth century, when the wine was at the height of its fame, close to one hundred and twenty were worked: the present vineyard is roughly half of that.
