PARKER: 94

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Soutard-Cadet (composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) offers up black plums, warm blackberries and smoked meats scents with hints of black soil, tobacco and black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic concentration and depth, with a firm, grainy frame and long savory finish.

James Suckling: 93

There’s a sense of density and richness here from the outset with aromas of cedar and blackberries, as well as dark plums. The palate delivers handy tannin grain and a long, structured finish. Try from 2022.

vinaris: 95+

With just one hectare of vineyard in Saint-Émilion, this is the best red in the region that we have tasted to date (2021). It is a serious, honest wine, with a very complex nose that does not stop unfolding in layers, full of notes of ripe fruit and liquor. Silky, wide, tasty and delicate on the palate. Fantastic wine, a treat for the senses.

One hectare. That is the whole property, and it yields some 5,200 bottles a year: an entire vintage would fit in a van.

It is wedged between Château Soutard, Château Cadet-Pontet and Château Dassault, on clay-limestone, and planted entirely to merlot with vines averaging thirty-six years.

Hand harvest, and ageing with 25% new barrels and the rest of one or more wines.

It should not be confused with Château Soutard-Cadet, with a hyphen: that is a separate property, in other hands. The names are close enough that catalogues and search engines mix them up regularly.
