Bouchard Père et Fils, founded in 1731 and owned by the Henriot family since 1995, is one of the largest private domaine owners in Burgundy, with 130 hectares of vines including 74 hectares of Premier Cru and 12 hectares of Grand Cru; this Clos du Roi belongs to their Domaine range, meaning it is produced exclusively from estate-owned vines rather than purchased fruit. The Clos du Roi is a well-defined Premier Cru climat at the northern end of Beaune, east- and south-east-facing at 210–260 metres altitude on clay-limestone soils with a 13% slope, of which Bouchard holds 0.83 hectares of the 13.24-hectare total. The vineyard originally belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and received its name in 1482, when Louis XI annexed the Duchy to the French Crown following the death of Charles the Bold — a royal association so prestigious that the wine was subsequently served at the court of Versailles.

For the 2020 vintage, the vines were farmed under organic conversion, a transition Bouchard began across the estate in 2009, with full certification expected from the 2025 vintage onward; grapes were harvested by hand in small 13 kg crates with careful bunch-by-bunch sorting, then fermented in small vats with a maceration of 12 to 16 days before ageing 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels with 30 to 40% new wood. The 2020 growing season in Burgundy was warm and dry, yielding small, thick-skinned berries with high natural concentration, and the resulting wine is structured and compact, with firm but well-integrated tannins, good sustaining acidity, and a cellaring potential of 7 to 10 years and beyond; Bouchard recommends decanting to fully reveal the depth of this sun-drenched, characterful terroir.
