Bouchard Père et Fils, founded in 1731 and owned by the Henriot family since 1995, is one of the largest private domaine owners in Burgundy, with 130 hectares of vines; this Clos du Roi belongs to their Domaine range, produced exclusively from estate-owned vines. The Clos du Roi is a well-defined Premier Cru climat at the northern end of Beaune, east- and south-east-facing at 210–260 metres altitude on clay-limestone soils with a 13% slope, of which Bouchard holds 0.83 hectares of the 13.24-hectare total. The vineyard belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and received its name in 1482, when Louis XI annexed the Duchy to the French Crown; the wine was subsequently served at the court of Versailles.

For the 2020 vintage, the vines were farmed under organic conversion, a transition Bouchard began across the estate in 2009, with full certification expected from the 2025 vintage onward; grapes were harvested by hand in small 13 kg crates with careful bunch-by-bunch sorting, then fermented in small vats with a maceration of 12 to 16 days before ageing 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels with 30 to 40% new wood.

The house did not begin in wine. Michel Bouchard founded it in Beaune in 1731 as a cloth business, and it was his son Joseph who in 1746 began selling wine and, above all, buying vineyards. The first purchase came in 1775 and it was no ordinary one: Volnay Les Caillerets.

The other landmark is from 1820, when Bernard Bouchard bought the Château de Beaune, a former royal fortress built in the fifteenth century on the orders of Louis XI. The house's cellars are still there: a military building turned into a winery.

Almost three centuries of buying parcel by parcel have left an uncommon holding: some one hundred and thirty hectares across four hundred and fifty plots, with twelve hectares of grand cru, seventy-four of premier cru and four monopoles. It is one of the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d'Or.

In 1995 the family sold the house to Joseph Henriot, who brought it into a group alongside Champagne Henriot and the Chablis house William Fèvre.
