Château Malescot St. Exupéry, AOP Margaux, Médoc (3rd Grand Cru Classé 1855). 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Density of 10,000 vines/ha; average vine age around 35 years.

Hand-harvested. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aged 16 months in new French oak barrels.

El Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry 2016 es un vino tinto de la región de Burdeos, concretamente de la denominación de origen Margaux en Francia. La bodega que lo elabora es el Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry, reconocida como Tercer Grand Cru Classé en la clasificación de 1855 del Médoc.

El vino presenta una composición varietal de 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc y 5% Petit Verdot. Los viñedos se encuentran a una densidad de 10.000 cepas por hectárea, con una edad media de las vides de aproximadamente 35 años. La vendimia se realiza de forma manual. La elaboración incluye una fermentación en depósitos de acero inoxidable termorregulados y una crianza de 16 meses en barrica nueva de roble francés.

En cuanto a sus características organolépticas, la guía Parker describe un color granate medio a profundo, con aromas a grosella negra, tierra fragante, tabaco y lilas, acompañado de un matiz de moca. Se presenta de cuerpo medio a lleno, con capas de fruta expresivas, taninos maduros y granulados, además de una gran longitud y profundidad en el final. James Suckling lo define como un tinto impresionante, con notas a grosella, moras, rosas y violetas. Destaca por su cuerpo medio a lleno, taninos ultra-finos y un acabado fino y pulido, aunque potente. Según este crítico, resulta superior al 2015.

En puntuaciones, Parker le otorga 95 puntos y James Suckling 97 puntos. Suckling aconseja empezar a beberlo a partir de 2024.

PARKER: 95

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Malescot St. Exupery sings of cassis, fragrant earth, tobacco and lilacs with a compelling waft of mocha. Medium to full-bodied and strutting loads of expressive fruit layers at this youthful stage, it's framed by ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing with great length and depth.

James Suckling: 97

A stunning red with currants, blackberries, roses and violets. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins and polish and finesse to the powerful tannins. A real stunner. Better than 2015. Take a serious look at it, beginning 2024.

The name on the label was formed in two stages, and both surnames have a story. The estate appears in 1616 in the hands of the Escousses family, and in 1697 Louise Escousses sold it to Simon Malescot, adviser to Louis XIV in the Bordeaux Parliament, who left it his surname.

The second came later, with Jean-Baptiste Saint-Exupéry, who added his to the château's. He was the great-grandfather of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the aviator who wrote The Little Prince. The surname on the bottle is his family's.

In the 1855 Médoc classification it entered as a Troisième Cru Classé of Margaux.

On 1 June 1955 it was bought by Paul and Roger Zuger. The property then had barely seven hectares; today there are twenty-eight, across five parcels within the commune of Margaux, with the winery and cellars in the village itself. Jean-Luc Zuger runs it.
