Château Guiraud

The property was called the noble house of Bayle and belonged to the Mons de Saint Poly family. In 1766 it was bought by Pierre Guiraud, a Bordeaux wine merchant, who left it his surname. In the 1855 classification it entered as a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes.

On 20 July 2006 it was bought by Robert Peugeot and three wine men: Olivier Bernard, Stephan von Neipperg and Xavier Planty.

What sets the house apart is a decision that took fifteen years to be formally recognised. In 1996 they stopped using synthetic products and pesticides, and in 2011 Guiraud became the first estate classified in 1855 — in all of Bordeaux, not only Sauternes — to obtain organic certification.

Hedgerows and insect hotels ring the vineyard, and within the estate there is a conservatory holding more than one hundred and thirty-five vine clones: a living bank of plant material, which is one way of keeping the genetic diversity that modern viticulture tends to narrow.

Planted with 65% sémillon and 35% sauvignon blanc.
