Ca' Di Mat
We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.
The name is in Piedmontese: «Ca' di Mat» is the house of fools. And another of their wines, Valautín, is the valley of the small vineyards, also in Piedmontese.
The explanation lies in who set it up: the couple Paolo Armando and Victoria Serrano, with two partners, Curro Bareño and Jesús Olivares, who came from building projects in Ribeira Sacra.
They are in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, on granite relief. The project comes out of a family farming estate that had vines, olives, almonds and a vegetable garden.
They work 20 hectares of old vineyard, thirty to eighty years old, organically: garnacha, albillo real and moscatel, spread over small plots with different orientations.
Fuente de los Huertos comes from a sixty-year-old plot at almost 800 metres, facing northwest, on granite soil: 100% garnacha, whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, three months of maceration and twelve in 3,000-litre foudres, with 4,000 bottles. Los Peros comes from vines around a hundred years old at almost 850 metres, unirrigated and bush-trained, inside a Special Protection Area for birds and the Natura 2000 network: picked by hand into 15-kilo crates, spontaneously fermented with whole fruit, macerated sixty days and aged a year in 500-litre French oak barrels.
