Augalevada

We let you know when a new wine arrives or drops in price.

The house is named after the stream that runs right through it: «levada» means stream in Galician.

The project was set up by Liliana Fernández and Iago Garrido in 2009, when he bought four hectares of abandoned terraces in the north of Ribeiro and set about bringing them back. They are farmed biodynamically today. The winery is in Rioboó, in the municipality of Cenlle, in a valley behind the monastery of San Clodio, in an area that was once known for its reds.

The clay jars were made by the master potter Juan Padilla, of Villarrobledo, and they are buried under the cellar floor. Each amphora and each barrel develops its own veil of flor. In 2014 Iago went as far as burying an amphora of treixadura in the middle of the vineyard, and that wine also aged under flor.

Ollos de Roque comes from those four hectares of granite and slate. The fruit is foot-trodden and gently pressed; fermentation starts in stainless steel and finishes in 400-litre amphorae.

Ageing runs ten months: one third in 400-litre clay jars and two thirds in 600 and 840-litre barrels. There were 2,400 bottles.
