Château Coutet

The building predates the wine. Construction begins at the end of the thirteenth century and its tower follows the same design as the military works of the English occupation of Guyenne, when Aquitaine was under the English crown.

The first wine did not come until 1643, made by Charles Le Guérin. That makes Coutet one of the oldest wine properties in Sauternes.

It stands in Barsac and entered the 1855 classification as a Premier Cru Classé. The Baly family runs it today, with Aline Baly at the head.

Thirty-eight and a half hectares on a chequerboard of red clay set over a limestone bed full of starfish fossils. The vines average forty years and are split 75% sémillon, 23% sauvignon and 2% muscadelle.
